Objective 1
Explain dependency and ageing ratios. Examine the impacts of youthful and ageing populations.
We have already learnt that the population dynamics of a place can change between one country and another. Some countries have a very high fertility rate whilst some are very low. Each of these scenario's can lead to problems in the immediate or long term future of a country and in this section we will examine the impacts in countries with the highest and lowest fertility rates. We will learn about Youthful and Ageing Populations.

As Geographers we study many impacts of different processes and situations. In terms of the impacts of different population situations, these can be both positive and negative. When we have a number of impacts we can also categorise them to help us remember and understand them. In this activity we will look at the impacts of an ageing population and decide if they are positive or negative impacts and also categorise them as Economic impacts or Social impacts.

Objective 2
Evaluate examples of a pro-natalist policy and an anti-natalist policy.
Many countries in the world have attempted to place controls on the growth rate of their population, either by attempting to slow it down or speed it up. These policies have specific names as highlighted on the right. In this section we are going to look at the policies employed by a number of countries, discover the details of how these policies were introduced and assess the effectiveness of each policy.
|
Anti-Natalist Policy: A policy designed to slow down population growth within a country, usually by lowering the fertility rate
Pro-Natalist policy: A policy designed to increase the population growth rate of a country by encouraging increased birth rates.

Activity 1: Anti-Natal policy. Your job is to create a detailed case study about China's 'One Child Policy'. Your target audience for this case study is your fellow students, in fact - they will be responsible for assessing the quality of your case study. To help you you will have a short guidance document on what to include in your case study, an information file about the one child policy, and an amazing creation called "the internet". You can use this to research further details about the policy and find extra information to personalise your case study and make it unique.

Activity 2: Pro-Natal policy. This time I would like you to produce a smaller information sheet (maximum 1 side of A4) about the pro-natal policy for a country of your choice. The article below gives you some information and a head start for several countries from the European Union, all of which have or had pro-natal policies. The countries mentioned are; Sweden, Norway, the UK, Germany, Poland, France and Italy. If you would like to chose another country, you can, but it must be a country that has followed a pro-natal policy and one that you can source a lot of information on. My suggestions would be; Singapore, Russia and Japan
