Objective 1: To examine theories for predicting and
reflecting on the changing patterns of global disparity
Objective 2: To understand the changing pattern of global
and regional disparity in life expectancy
|
Different parts of the world have very different life expectancy. There are many reasons for this and many factors that affect life expectancy. We will discuss these during the unit. In general life expectancy has been increasing over the years across the globe, but it has increased at different rates in different areas. As well as this, there are some countries that experience drops in life expectancy. Sometimes this is due to war, disease or famine but sometimes it can be a less obvious combination of factors.

Objective 3: To understand the changing pattern of
global and regional disparity in education
Here we examine the relationship between education and development and realise that it follows similar steps to Economic development in that countries can go through primary, secondary and tertiary phases as they develop. We will also map out what we think is the global educational core. This might help in deciding where you might want to go to college or University. Meanwhile, if you think your school life is tough, just think about this journey to school (this will also help us to understand how some communities are educationally disadvantaged through physical geography.

Objective 4: To understand the changing pattern
of global and regional disparity in income
This is a very brief section where we recap some of the themes and concepts we have learned during the previous weeks of the course. The main idea is a re-confirming that income is not equal in the world and to understand the balance between the richest few and the poorest majority. We will also discuss the direction that this is travelling, are the rich becoming richer or are we seeing a balance of wealth? The answers are not always obvious and there are different perspectives to understand on this. An interesting perspective is outlined in this video, with some good statistical animations.

Objective 5: Examine the progress made in meeting the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) in poverty reduction, education and health.
The Millennium Development Goals were a set of objectives set up by the United Nations covering 8 aspects of development, although they came to an end in 2015, our job in this section is to make sure we understand each of the goals and assess their success. We will look at each in turn with case studies through the class delivering 10-15 minute lessons on each goal. This video gives some useful background.

We will also be looking at the new Global Goals, brought in to replace the original MDG's. These are more comprehensive and cover 17 different objectives. We will look at these in relation to the original goals to see how they have been developed. You will also choose your own specific target goal and think about ways that you might address it. There is some good information on the UN sites below.
