Objective 1: Explain the location of residential areas in
relation to wealth, ethnicity and family status
To start this section we will look at the different types of housing you can find in cities and the possible locations you will find different housing types. We will then look at ways in which segregation can happen within cities based on wealth, cultural background and ethnicity (and usually a mixture of all three!). We will look at the case study of London, an extremely cosmopolitan city. We will look at some of the ethnic minorities based in the Capital of the UK and how they have dispersed to lesser or greater extents since settling here. This will build up a mini case study where we concentrate on the Bangladeshi community living in London.

Objective 2: Examine patterns of urban poverty and deprivation
(such as slums, squatter settlements, areas of low‑cost housing and inner‑city areas).
Case Study: Lagos, Nigeria. We will be exploring this theme by watching some excerpts from the BBC series "Welcome to Lagos" Focussing on the 'Megacity project' designed to make Lagos, the largest city in Africa, into a modern megacity. Within this we will get first hand examples of the growing pains of a city in an LEDC as well as look at the informal economy within the city.

Objective 3: Explain the spatial pattern of economic activity, the zoning of urban and
suburban functions and the internal structure of the central business district (CBD).
In this section we will look at some classic Geographical models of cities made by Hoyt and Burgess. These will help us both to understand 'zoning' in cities and also the way that city shape and form has changed over time. We will in particular be focussing on the Central Business District to understand it's characteristics, positive and negative aspects and also the forces affecting these areas. We will conclude by trying to identify the CBD of Hong Kong.

Case Study: Reading, UK. We will conclude this section by looking at a case study for Reading in the UK. This is an example of a town that has seen significant changes in its urban structure over the years and will help us to understand the theories behind CBD's discussed.
